My husband and I bought our house in The Morvan in 1997 as a second home. We were living and working in Holland (my husband is Dutch) and it was seven or eight hours drive, perfect for long weekends.
In 2004 we made the decision to move here permanently and that was the beginning of the garden.
The garden is on five levels, the house being on the second level and it rises about 50 meters in total. The top level has been left as woodland, with a path winding through. The rest of the levels are the garden.
There is a pond, with fish (no herons only snakes which seem to get a fish each time). Beyond the pond is a box parterre with a path that leads to the stairs that take you up to the veggie garden. Around the vegetables there are perrenials with gravelled paths throughout.
From the veggie garden there is a walkway which leads along planting (perrenials, grasses, bushes, trees) to the adjacent wood. Above that is the top level.
Around the house there is a courtyard with a small greenhouse, climbing roses against the house, a herb garden and gravelled areas throughout with steps that lead to a patio area and beyond that the pond.
The intention of this blog is to take you through the year and how the garden unfolds from its winter sleep to a riot of colour in the summer, through autumn and back to winter. It is a garden with interest in all seasons and with planting for all seasons.
